How did Tupac die?

Legendary American rapper and actor, Tupac Amaru Shakur died on September 13th 1996.

Shakur was better known by his stage names, 2Pac and Makaveli. He was one of the best selling music artists in the world and sold over 75 million records worldwide. Tupac mostly sang about the violence and hardship in inner cities, racism and conflicts with other rappers.

On the night of 7th September 1996, he had attended a boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. After the match Shakur and his entourage got into a fight with Orlando Anderson, which was captured on the hotel’s video surveillance. Following the brawl, Shakur was travelling to Club 662 with his entourage in a black sedan when at 11.15pm a white Cadillac pulled up to the sedan, rolled down the window and rapidly fired gunshots at Shakur. He was hit in the thigh, right hand, pelvis and chest including a shot in his right lung. Paramedics were called and took Shakur to the University Medical Centre where he was heavily sedated and placed on a life support machine. Later he was put under a barbiturate induced coma after he kept trying to get out of bed. 6 days later on Friday September 13th 1996 while in the critical care unit, Shakur died of internal bleeding. Doctors had tried to revive him but were unable to stop the hemorrhaging and eventually his mother, Afeni told the doctors to stop and he was pronounced dead at 4.03pm. Cause of death was respiratory failure and cardiopulmonary arrest in connection with multiple gunshot wounds.

The police investigation and evidence gathered all pointed to a gang called the Southside Crips, of which Orlando Anderson was a member. It is claimed that the shooting was to avenge the beating of Anderson by Shakur earlier that night and that Anderson fired the fatal shots. Las Vegas police discounted Anderson as a suspect. He was later killed in an unrelated gang shooting so nobody was held accountable for Shakurs death although Anderson and the Crips remain the best supported theory of the murder of Shakur to date.

His body was cremated on 14th September and some of his ashes were mixed with marijuana and smoked by members of the Outlawz, an American hip hop group founded by Shakur in 1995.

Shakur’s mother founded the Shakur Family Foundation to preserve his legacy and to provide training and support for students who aspire to enhance their creative talents. The foundation opened the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Georgia in 2005.

In 2002 Shakur was number ten on the top earning dead celebrity list and in 2008 Shakur’s estate made $15 million.

MTV ranked Shakur at number 2 of the ‘Greatest MCs of all Time’ List , VH1 ranked him number 3 of the ‘Greatest Hip Hop Artists’ and he was inducted into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame in 2002. His double album, All Eyez on Me, is one of the highest-selling rap albums of all time, with over 5 million copies of the album sold in the United States alone by April 1996; it was eventually certified 9x platinum in June 1998 by the RIAA.
